JoJo Golden Spirit: Crit, Buffs & Debuffs Explained

Golden Spirit’s crit system runs on a stepped formula, not a flat percentage: your Crit Boost stat is compared to the target’s Crit Res in blocks of 100, and the crit damage multiplier moves in fixed increments from there. Crowd control follows a similar contested-stat pattern. None of this is announced anywhere in Devsisters’ marketing — it comes from the in-game attribute tooltips, documented on jojowiki.com’s Golden Spirit hub article. Here is what each stat actually does.

Crit Rate, Crit Res Rate and the “double damage” baseline

A basic critical hit deals double damage. Crit Rate is the chance your attack rolls a crit at all; Crit Res Rate is the target’s chance to cancel one. If a defender’s Crit Res Rate is higher than your Crit Rate, they have a chance to prevent your crit outright — every 1% of difference is worth 1% of prevention chance. So Crit Rate alone doesn’t guarantee a crit lands; a tanky, crit-res-stacked target can shrug some of them off before the damage formula even runs.

Crit Boost vs. Crit Res: the part nobody announces

Once a crit does land, the extra damage isn’t fixed at “double” — Crit Factor sets your baseline crit multiplier, and Crit Boost pushes it higher against a specific target using a stepped formula:

  • For every 100 points of difference between your Crit Boost and the target’s Crit Res, up to a 3,000-point gap, your Crit Factor changes by 0.5%.
  • Past a 3,000-point gap, each further 100-point step is worth 2% instead.
  • The bonus caps at +90% total.

In practice this means Crit Boost has diminishing marginal value against a target that’s already far below your gap threshold, and a sudden, large jump in effectiveness once you push past the 3,000-point line — a build-planning cliff that a flat “crit damage %” stat wouldn’t have.

Debuff Proficiency and Resilience: duration, not chance

Two attributes govern how long negative effects stick, separate from whether they land at all:

Attribute Effect
Debuff Proficiency Every 1% increases the duration of debuffs you apply by 1%
Resilience Every 1% reduces the duration of debuffs you receive by 1%

Neither stat affects whether a debuff connects — that’s a separate roll.

Effect Hit vs. Effect Res: whether crowd control lands at all

Effect Hit and Effect Res govern crowd-control effects specifically (stuns, roots, and similar), using the same contested-stat pattern as crits: if a target’s Effect Res is higher than the attacker’s Effect Hit, the target has a chance to resist the crowd-control effect outright, at 1% resistance per 1% of stat difference. This is a pass/fail roll on top of whatever duration math Debuff Proficiency and Resilience would apply if it lands.

Block and Accuracy: the other pass/fail roll

The same contested-stat shape governs physical mitigation. If a defender’s Block Rate exceeds the attacker’s Accuracy Rate, the attack can be blocked outright — 1% chance per 1% of difference — and Block Strength then determines how much damage a successful block actually reduces. Hit Rate and Dodge Rate work the same way for whether an attack connects at all before any of the above applies.

Why this matters for team building

Every one of these systems is a contested pair (Crit Rate/Crit Res Rate, Crit Boost/Crit Res, Effect Hit/Effect Res, Accuracy/Block Rate) rather than a stat that just scales in a vacuum. A unit built purely to maximize its own offense-side number can still get walled by a target whose matching defense-side stat is high enough — which is part of why fighting styles and team composition matter more than any single stat line.
